Introduction

These milestones usually occur during the first five years of life and are fairly predictable. When a child is not reaching these milestones, their development may be termed as 'delayed'. There are many reasons that a child may not be reaching their milestones and these will need to be fully investigated.

Or - refers to a child not reaching expected developmental milestones at the typical age.

Developmental milestones

Include skills such as:

  • Motor skills: sitting, crawling, standing, walking, running
  • Fine motor skills: grasping objects, drawing, using utensils, buttoning clothes
  • Self-care skills: feeding, dressing, toileting
  • Play skills: interacting with toys appropriately and engaging with others
  • Learning and cognitive skills: following instructions, problem-solving, attention, and memory

An Occupational Therapist assesses:

  • Which milestones are delayed
  • How the delays affect the child's daily functioning
  • Whether the child requires therapy, specialized support, or accommodation

Examples:

  • A child who is not walking by the expected age.
  • A child who struggles to hold a pencil or use scissors compared to peers.
  • A child who has difficulty dressing, feeding themselves, or participating in school activities.
